As I was approaching retirement from the Marine Corps, I needed to develop an exit strategy that would allow me to transition into something that could lead to meaningful employment doing something I enjoy without having to start at the bottom of the organizational hierarchy. Starting a small business was something I was fortunate enough to be able to conceptualize, fund (initially), and take a calculated risk on.
Many business experts and books will tell you not to put an idea first, because you’ll fall in love with it and then be crushed if it fails. So I didn’t. Instead, I conducted market research to identify a need in the community that wasn’t in a market dominated by or swarming with competitors. There were a few, but I decided to start a home and errand service because it was something that aligned best with my interests and most easily marketable to my community.
Yes and no. There are quite a lot of steps involved in making a small business a reality. It took a lot of time, patience, diligence, attention to detail, and enough money up front to invest in startup costs, equipment, and a working capital for projected operating expenses. One of the first and most important steps was to build a business plan, which I’ve placed here for transparency to our customers. In the near future, I’ll create a page outlining my entire startup process.
This is typically the first question we get asked! Generally, for home and errand services, we charge an hourly fee, though there are some jobs we’ll only charge a flat rate for. Our transportation services are calculated a little differently, but rest assured our prices are fair and competitive.
For complete transparency, we’ve built a pricing guide for our customers located here.
While we are building our customer base, we operate in the Jaffrey-Rindge region, but given our availability and public demand, we’ll expand our market. If you’re in a nearby town and are interested in seeking our services, contact us and we’ll see if we can accommodate!
We understand hiring a startup company can be risky. Business goes both ways, and we need loyal satisfied customers just as much as you need quality service! With our all veteran staff, we‘re disciplined in upholding our core values of quality, value, and respect. We are attentive, thorough, and polite and will never place you, your home, or business in an unfavorable position. Trust is developed over time and we aim to make BZ Vets a trusted name in the community.
